Obama calls on Congress to back small business bill

AFP, July, 2010

WASHINGTON (AFP) US President Barack Obama called on Congress Friday to swiftly pass help for small businesses, as he poked Republicans and touted a week of “enormous” progress for his recovery plans.

Obama thanked the Senate for reviving his proposal for a fund which would encourage community banks to make loans to small businesses, which have had a tough time finding credit as the economic crunch lingers.

He also highlighted the Wall Street reform bill, another new law he signed to cut wasteful government payments and the passage of a bill to extend unemployment benefits.

“Taken together, we made enormous progress this week,” said Obama, in remarks possibly intended to refocus attention on the economy, after a row over a US government official wrongly fired…

MONTREUX, Switzerland

The film director Roman Polanski, free after nine months of detention, arrived Saturday at the Montreux Jazz Festival in his first public appearance since being released last week from house arrest .

Polanski, 76, arrived Saturday evening in a sport utility vehicle with tinted windows. When he emerged, he brushed his fingers through his hair – a trademark gesture – then was ushered into an elevator. Security personnel protected him from an eager crush of photographers.

Polanski’s wife, the actress and singer Emmanuelle Seigner, performed shortly after his arrival, wearing a flannel shirt, a black hat and jeans.

“That was the theme to ‘Rosemary’s Baby,’

” she said after her first song – a reference to the 1968 film directed by Polanski.

The Oscar-winning director was freed Monday from house arrest when the Swiss government refused to deport him to the United States

Having adequate water enables your body to

July 29, 2010 - 2:41 pm No Comments

Having adequate water enables your body to function properly, including its ability to burn fat. Water also flushes toxins and impurities from the body.

5) Always incorporate weight training and cardiovascular exercise into your fat loss nutrition plan.

6) Use the power of vegetables to help you reach your goals. Vegetables are the most nutrient dense food around meaning that you can eat a tremendous quantity of vegetables and consume very few calories. The high fiber content of vegetables also causes your body to work very hard just to digest the vegetables, which means that the calories you do consume are all burned up just in the digestion process. So, in turn, vegetables are negative calories! If you get hungry you can always add more vegetables with no fear of hurting your fat loss efforts (Fried okra does not count!)

7) Pick a nutrition plan that you can live with and that you have faith in. If you cannot consistently follow a nutritional program then you will never have success with it. A good rule to remember is that any ?diet? that you eventually come off of will fail in the long run.

And each dating site

July 29, 2010 - 12:24 pm No Comments

And each dating site owner is the sleazy estate agent trying to encourage you to buy!

But the trick is?.

The trick to getting the most out of these sites is to know what your looking for, and then look at what each site in that category offers you. I mean why bother joining a Jewish Dating site if you?re catholic? Why join a matchmaking site if you?re just after a bit of fun? This all seems quite obvious but you would be surprised how many singles fall into this trap and that?s why a lot of single men and women aren?t successful!

Right, so now you know the key to Internet Dating, but what should you be looking for from a dating site?

Well to start with, would you give your details to any stranger? I?m sure not, so why start now. There is some Internet sites that I would personally never give my name too, let alone my personal details!

Would you feel a bit uneasy going out on a date with someone and not knowing his or her full background? Do they have a history that they don?t want to share and if so then why don?t they want you to know?

I?m not trying to scare you (I?m a very strong believer in Internet Dating and have been doing it for years!) but getting these little details right will ensure that you get the most enjoyable, successful time out of Online Dating! In fact, my favourite site (http://www.truedating.biz) covers all these points.

The manufacturer has labeled this a, ?SlimFit?

The manufacturer has labeled this a, ?SlimFit? model and rightly so. (At 120 pounds, it’s still a team lift, however.)

I get the thing upstairs, unpack it, go through the first time set up and auto program to my new TV’s content. The happy surprise is that there are hidden channels your new HD tuner decodes for you! After almost cutting myself on razor-sharp pictures broadcast in proper 1080i HD resolution, I think, ?now I’ll have some REAL fun and see a DVD like I’ve never seen it before.?

In went the goofy adventure of Captain Sparrow, ?The Curse of The Black Pearl.? The kid in me wanted to play with the new toy… I was totally silent as I watched the opening scenes in horror: Letter box’s black-line haters haven’t seen anything yet.

Welcome home – we missed you all

0 Comments | Sevenoaks Chronicle, May 6, 2010

Have we counted everyone back home? Every last Sevenoaks business person trapped in a motel near JFK?

All the teenagers stuck in Florence with grey-faced teachers who long ago gave up the pretence that there was anything educational going on?

Sevenoaks is humming with stories. My friend E’s husband, stranded in Vietnam, cunningly flew east instead of west, hoping to sneak up on Britain from an unexpected angle.

I also heard of a hotshot executive who, finding himself trapped in Prague, summoned the company chauffeur to pop over from Dresden, and drop him off at home in Bristol. Let’s hope the overtime was good…

My daughter found a seat on a coach hired by some enterprising Brits who were staying at a hotel in Dubrovnik.

As is so often the case with Brits in a crisis, stiffness was not confined to lips, and by the time they reached Slovenia, the venture had descended into the school trip from hell.

A sudden panic about whether the relief driver was falling asleep resulted in a retired police officer taking a principled stance on the need for a rest break.

Standing his ground, the ex-cop soon found himself standing on a grass verge, with his wife, a pile of luggage, his integrity intact and the knotty problem of how to get them all from Somewhere In Germany back home to Nuneaton.

(My daughter and her throbbing abscess made it home, I’m pleased to tell you, so that she could be rushed into a proper British hospital for an emergency op.)

The effort people made to get home was quite surprising, given that they were often “trapped” at the edge of infinity pools in 35C sunshine.

But then, I’m always struck by how determined Sennockians are to get home on normal weekdays, even when everything is against them.

Charging up the escalator at Charing Cross, you hear the mass groan of Sevenoaks residents spotting that the next train to Sevenoaks is marked by a dash, meaning that no-one knows where the poxy train has gone or whether it has any plans to make it into London.

(If it turns out that the delay is down to a fatality on the line, I am deeply ashamed to confess to a brief surge of irritation at someone’s lack of consideration to fellow commuters, before I get a grip on my conscience.)

If a train actually arrives, we charge like rhinos at feeding time, mowing down slower passengers as we sprint to reach the coach that will be nearest to Sevenoaks Station’s stairs.

And we spend the journey making furtive calls to report our position and ETA (“I’m at Petts Wood. Should be in about 8.15.”) so that the porcini mushroom lasagne can be neatly co-ordinated with our arrival.

So wanderers, welcome back!

We missed you on platform six.

Weather bulletins by phone seem smart backup plan

0 Comments | Florida Times Union, Jul 25, 2010 | by DAVID BAUERLEIN

Duval County residents and businesses wanting to get National Weather Service bulletins of hazardous weather can sign up for a free service that sends the alerts straight to their telephones.

It’s a no-cost alternative to buying weather radios for National Weather Service alerts.

The Duval County Emergency Operations Center began offering the service this year as part of the Code Red notification system. So far, about 10,000 applicants have registered phone numbers for the Code Red weather alerts.

As hurricane season gets more active – witness the recent arrival of Tropical Storm Bonnie – the ability to get real-time updates from the National Weather Service can make a difference when every second counts.

One way to stay informed around-the-clock is by using weather radios that pick up broadcasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the federal agency that houses the National Weather Service. The weather service produces the alerts of hazardous weather.

To hear the alerts via radio, people must purchase radios with the special receivers. The weather radios are sold at various retail outlets. The cost of a standalone receiver will range from $20 to $100, according to the National Weather Service. When an alert is broadcast, the weather radio squeals like an alarm – loud enough to wake someone – and then relays the prerecorded message.

The Code Red weather alerts operate in similar fashion, but the warning is communicated via telephone rather than radio. The “alarm” is the phone ringing. People pick up the phone and hear the alert. The weather alerts are for thunderstorm warnings, flash flood warnings and tornado warnings.

The Code Red weather alert system isn’t intended to replace weather radios, said Mo Braren, senior planner for operations at the Duval County Emergency Operations Center.

“It’s to augment it,” he said. “Some people don’t want to spend $35 for a weather radio.”

Though the weather alerts are a new feature, the Code Red system has been operating in Duval County for several years. Neighboring counties also have the basic Code Red system, which enables emergency authorities to quickly send pre-recorded messages to targeted areas by mass-calling telephone numbers in the area. The messages can involve evacuations, alerts about missing children, information about criminal activity, and other issues of public safety.

For that basic service, Code Red uses phone numbers listed in the White Pages. If your phone number isn’t listed or you use a cell phone, you can add those phone numbers to the Code Red system by contacting the sheriff’s office or emergency operations center in your county. Internet sites enable online registration.

The service is free and it makes sense to register all your phone numbers. For instance, if you are away from home – watching a youth sporting event, shopping at the grocery store, whatever – it’s helpful to have the information delivered to you right then and there.

Duval County has taken Code Red one step further by offering the weather alerts to residents and businesses in the county. Anyone who wants the weather alerts must sign up for them. Even if your phone number is listed in the White Pages, you must register for the alerts. You can put several phone numbers on the application.

To register online, go to www.coj.net and type in “code red” in the search field. Then click on the link for “Code Red Notification System.” People without Internet access can call 630-CITY and register over the phone.

There are some advantages to purchasing a weather radio. Many weather radios give people a way to choose the geographic area in which they want to hear alerts

Therefore, natural vitamin E supplements, which have the d-form of tocopherols, have greater bioavailability than the synthetic forms, which have all the isomers, i.e. the d and l forms of alpha, beta, gamma and delta. Natural vitamin E is twice as potent as the synthetic form, for instance 67 milligram (mg) of alpha-tocopherol is equivalent to 45 mg of dl alpha-tocopherol.

According to the research done in the National Research Council of Canada, the preference of d form over l form is shown by higher presence of vitamin E in brain, lungs, heart and muscles. Hence, it is advised to take natural vitamin E, even though it costs twice as much as synthetic vitamin E.

Vitamin E provides detailed information on Vitamin E, Benefit Of Vitamin E, Vitamin E Oil, Natural Vitamin E and more. Vitamin E is affiliated with Liquid Multi Vitamins..

July 29, 2010 - 12:55 am No Comments

T told us a story about his adventures down in old Mexico. He crossed the border and just kept going, back in the days when bandits were even more common, and nobody in that outback or even in most of the States knew how to fix an Italian super car.

No problem, when his tailpipe broke, out in the middle of nowhere, he fixed it himself; by bundling up some magazines, taking some twine, and well I forget the rest, but it held until he could get parts upon his return.

Mr. T must have decided he was the only teacher who was capable of turning the boys in his class into self-reliant men. So, he?d do demonstrations of his toughness.

His favorite was the ?L Lever,? a gymnastics pose usually done on parallel bars. You elevate yourself with your arms, lock out your elbows so your body looks like an ?I? and then raise your legs so they are perpendicular to the ground.

Hold that position, and you look like an ?L,? and that?s an ?L Lever.?

Nobody in my class could rival Mr.
